Greener is Better! Top Vehicle Picks in the Green!

If you are looking to go “Green” in your next vehicle purchase, we have laid out some of the best Green models available in the US! Recently awarded as the top Green pickup in the US is the RAM 1500 Eco-Diesel truck. The award was given by Green Car Journal at the 46th annual San Antonio Auto & Truck Show in San Antonio, Texas in November 2015.  This magnificent truck has a 28-mpg rating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The RAM 1500 is at the top of the charts for highway-cycle test result ever achieved by a full-size, half-ton pickup. The RAM also exceeds the EPA highway rating for the top-ranked small pickup. The RAM 1500 leads the way in pickup trucks in EPA's current highway fuel-economy rankings.  Learn more about this award winning pick-up truck at Auto Body News.

The American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) in Washington, D.C. rates the greenest vehicles with many elements in mind:  “We analyze automakers' test results for fuel economy and emissions as reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, along with other specifications reported by automakers. We estimate pollution from vehicle manufacturing, from the production and distribution of fuel and from vehicle tailpipes. We count air pollution, such as fine particles, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and other pollutants according to the health problems caused by each pollutant. We then factor in greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide) and combine the emissions estimates into a “Green Score” that runs on a scale from 0 to 100. The top vehicle this year scores a 63, the average is 40 and the worst gas-guzzlers score around 20.”

Electric vehicles win over with all 12 slots in the annual “Greenest Cars” list by the ACEEE.  Another favorable point for Green vehicle purchasers of full-electric and plug-in hybrid cars are still eligible for a federal tax credit as rich as $7,500, in addition to any state and local incentives that may apply.

For the third year - the ACEEE says the greenest car sold in the U.S. is the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, which receives a top “Green Score” of 63, and is EPA rated at the electric equivalent of 107 mpg in combined city/highway driving. In addition, receiving a Green Score of 63 is the Chevrolet Spark EV with an “e-mpg” rating of 119 city/highway. Toyota leads the list with three hybrids represented, with Chevrolet placing two electric cars among this year’s greenest models. See the full list at Forbes.com

You can find the Greenercar ratings for any vehicle between 2000 and 2016 and you can even build custom lists to compare vehicles at greenercars.org.  Happy Greener vehicle shopping!

Technology & Transportation – How it will change our lives?

Technology is changing our lives in nearly every facet including the way we drive and for many who work in the transportation industry major changes and eliminations will eventually take place in industry positions.  Employees of various industries are concerned that their jobs could be replaced by driverless technology.  These concerns according to the technology industry are premature and Huffington Post who has followed the driverless cars story explains that the technology is inevitable and will replace jobs but it will be more like a marathon than a sprint in arriving.  Employees in the transportation industry have plenty of time to come up with a plan.

With Tesla announcing its release of the autopilot function on their Electric Cars this summer we are speeding faster toward driverless cars on a personal level than most could have imagined.   Google announced that it will also be launching their driverless cars this summer in California.  Of course, “safety drivers” on board will be available to assist and the cars will be slowly moving along at 25mph.

According to Google from a post on their blog:  “…and during this next phase of our project we’ll have safety drivers aboard with a removable steering wheel, accelerator pedal, and brake pedal that allow them to take over driving if needed. We’re looking forward to learning how the community perceives and interacts with the vehicles, and to uncovering challenges that are unique to a fully self-driving vehicle—e.g., where it should stop if it can’t stop at its exact destination due to construction or congestion.”

In the meantime, as we await the driverless cars, hands free experience, to allow us the freedom to text, email, take conference calls and chat with our buddy on FB (hopefully without any legal limits) we have the Auto Industry offering new online capabilities in our vehicles with a touch of a finger at an app ready console.

GMC and Buick are kicking off their 2016 models with many of the comforts of home and office.  Here are some of the latest inclusion of high tech in the auto industry one can celebrate in the coming year:

“Apple CarPlay takes the iPhone features customers want to access while driving and puts them on the vehicle’s display in a smart, simple manner. This allows drivers to make calls, send and receive messages and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri. Apple CarPlay-supported apps include Phone, Messages, Maps, Music and compatible third-party apps. A full list of those apps can be found at Apple.com/ios/carplay. Apple CarPlay is compatible with iOS 7.1 or higher.

Android Auto is built around Google Maps, Google Now and the ability to talk to Google, as well as a growing audio and messaging app ecosystem that includes WhatsApp, Skype, Google Play Music, Spotify and podcast players. A full list of supported apps is available at g.co/androidauto. Android Auto requires a phone running an Android Lollipop 5.0 operating system or higher.” See Buick.com and GMC.com for more details.

Prepare yourself for the ultimate driving experience with the anticipation of driverless cars without limitation in using the technology that makes the world go round!

Cars Powered by their Own Body Parts?

Richards' Collision center certainly powers up when it hears great news about cleaner, greener, more efficient means of transportation.  Electric cars could be super charged to run as far and aggressively as gas driven vehicles. NDTV.com reports:

A car powered by its own body panels such as roof, doors and bonnet could soon hit the roads, thanks to new lightweight 'supercapacitors' developed by researchers. The 'supercapacitors' can be combined with regular batteries to dramatically boost the power of an electric car.

The supercapacitors - a "sandwich" of electrolyte between two all-carbon electrodes - were made into a thin and extremely strong film with a high power density.

The film could be embedded in a car's body panels, roof, doors, bonnet and floor - storing enough energy to turbocharge an electric car's battery in just a few minutes.

"After one full charge this car should be able to run up to 500km - similar to a petrol-powered car and more than double the current limit of an electric car," said Liu.
